ATA Science at Palmer Station and on the Antarctic Peninsula

Scotia The Scotia project, led by scientist and researcher Dave Barbeau of the University of South Carolina, is a 3-year investigation involving field and laboratory work involving geological samples throughout the Antarctic Peninsula, the Scotia Sea, and southernmost South America.

LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research)

The seabird component, led by W.R. Fraser, seeks to identify and understand the environmental factors that affect the adélie penguin population, especially the relationship between climate, availability of krill (the adélies primary food source), and breeding success. The team also works on the breeding and foraging ecology of the chinstrap and gentoo penguins, the southern giant petrel, and the brown and south polar skuas.

The zooplankton and micronekton component, led by R. Ross and L. Quetin, is in the final year of a 6-year project studying the distribution and population of Antarctic krill. An important component of this project focuses on identifying environmental factors that impact the growth, reproduction, and recruitment success of krill populations.
